Fox Fund: Gataka Project

Our first task was meeting with a contractor to get a bid on the cost of constructing a secure pen to house 8-10 goats and 300 hens.  After some misunderstandings and haggling, and then misunderstandings again, the bid came in at around 181,000 Ksh, or $2700.  The construction of the goat/hen shed was more involved than we had thought.  This was, in part, due to the need for security, because of the goats’ value.  The kitchen at Gataka, on the other hand, was more simple than we had imagined.  Granted for $2500, the construction of timber frames and tin walls and roofing is estimated at 51,000 Ksh, and the industrial size stove around 65,000 ksh - totaling the equivalent of about $1,800.

To date, the construction of the goat/hen shed is complete.  We have spent over $3,100 to date on this shed.  The remaining $4300 will be spent on airfare and the goats.  We received over $2000 in donations that will fund the construction of the kitchen and the purchase of the stove.
