Fox Fund: Gataka Project
The Gataka Project: the construction of a soup kitchen in the children’s center at Gataka, Kenya, as well as the purchase of and housing for ten goats, the sale of whose milk will generate revenue for the kitchen. (Read more here about goats and the wonders they accomplish.)
In January 2008, Chelsea Dunbar and Katie Wentzel conducted some basic fieldwork to determine the specific needs of the area. We are all returning in August, when they will prepare a report detailing the progress and accomplishments of the project, for conference presentation and eventual journal submission.
Chelsea and Katie did research on the number of orphans and vulnerable children in Gataka, structural plans for the kitchen building itself, the availability and cost of local building supplies, and shopped for kitchen equipment. Given budgetary limitations, some difficult decisions had to be made. These decisions will be detailed in their final report, and will serve as an important model for future projects.
